The handbook said something about 90 day probationary period. I'm now 60 days on the job. So a few days ago, I asked my boss what happens after 90 days. Basically, what she said is that 90 days is just a number (she didn't say it word for word, btw.) People could be canned b4 their 90 days is up if they fvck up bad enough. And just bc ppl passed their 90 days doesn't mean they couldn't be canned later. As long as I'm performing well, I shouldn't worry. She also said although I'm kinda kicking
@ss, I still have room for improvement, like everyone else. I used to have performance issues but no longer. Now I'm like confused. WTF is 90 days anyhow? WHy am I so worried when I shouldn't be?
Usually the probationary period is a period when you are expected to make rookie mistakes and they are basically forgiven, but there is almost always an evaluation at the end of the 90 days. It will determine if you are doing the things that are basic to any job (for example completing assignments, submitting to your boss, dressing appropriately, etc., and they will likely evaluate if you have learned the job to the level expected at 90 days. In some jobs you should pretty well have it down pat in 90 days (or less, depending on the difficulty of the work). Other jobs, 90 days isn't much time. You'll need a year or more to fully understand the job, but the amount of stuff you've learned in 90 days will be a good indicator of how much you will actually know after a year.
It is nerve wracking for a first time job or first job with evals, but it really shouldn't be. You will find that the eval is pretty painless unless you are a douche, and if you are doing well it comes with a raise in most places. I think they do that to condition people to look forward to evals. lol. Not really, but it does kind of work that way anyway. I have been in a few places though where the bosses were so disorganized that it takes them 6mos to do a 90day eval. grr.
