This is a really stupid article, and posting this thread requires a complete failure of rational processes.

This was a hearing to collect viewpoints on why Americans aren't saving as much as they probably should. The idea that the government is considering eliminating IRAs and 401k plans is absurd; the idea that they're actually on the verge of "confiscating retirement accounts" is braindead stupid.

Seriously. You're a pretty bright person. Quit believing all this stupid bulls***.

Oh, thank GOD! Thanks for making me realize there's absolutely nothing to this.

@jonnythan Said

Say it with me, Alkaia:

"OK, it's possible I overreacted at this poorly-written, unsourced article's claims."

It's OK. Don't fight it, just accept your mistake and move on.

And you way way way under-reacted, like by 99%. And each time you do your cred takes another uppercut to the brain. Everybody knows the government would never have another hair-brained idea like this……again…....and again…..and again……and again…..and again……….

either way, the stock market is bloated falsely now by all that fed air money.

Fed air money!? Do you mean the new fiat money that they continue to make out of NOTHING!?

Look, if they stopped doing that (maipulating the damn markets) the stock market would be at zero (0) by now!

@Alkaia Said

oh and I dont invest in it myself personally, I have a broker.

I always loved that name. A broker: someone who makes a living by making his/her clients "broke"...

Here's some others. Dont expect it to be mainstream. They dont want you to know about this. Youll know about it when it passed.

https://www.examiner.com/article/government-considering-socializing-retirement-accounts

Mark Levin interviewed Professor Teresa Ghilarducci whose plan for the U.S. government to take over private pension plans to "protect retirees" is being touted by Congressman Barney Frank. This interview will go down as classic Mark Levin

The simply fact is they are talking about it. and with the massive debt we have, dont be surprised at what gets the hatchet all for the good of all, I am sure.

I would KILL to have a TSP plan. It's really one the best retirement plans in country and I for one would support the entire population have access to it. Frankly, an overhaul of the retirement system needs to happen. Employers need to offer more index funds, instead of actively managed funds with high expense ratios and loads.

While I don't think IRAs and 401ks will go away completely, more fiduciary standards need to be put in place.

We already have a national retirement system. It's called Social Security.

Brokers are there to sell you something. I personally have the majority of my investments in low-fee index funds in accounts with no sales commissions. If your interested in more information, check out any book by John Bogle, founder of Vanguard.

Not to mention, Barney Frank retired this session, and will be leaving DC at the end of the year...

But, she's never bothered with those pesky facts before, so why start now.

I have a retirement fund, thats why I am still in. Money doesnt gain interest at the rate just in a bond or savings account needed to have a viable retirement fund.

I dont use vanguard. I prefer fidelity. Ive used them all, Ive had the best success with fidelity.

oh and as I said, I may get out. Im stuggling with that My biggest question now is do I think the economy can recover in the next 20 years along with my retirment account. Its a long shot, always is. But the alternatives dont give a lot of hope either
